Last Will and Testament of William Crookes of Mosborough, yeoman (1676)

In the name of God Amen the Nynth day of May in the Eight and Twentieth year of the Raine of our Souvraigne Lord Charles the Second now King of England Of Anno Dm 1676. I William Crookes of Mosbrough in the p’ish of Eckington in the County of Derby yeom. Being sick in body but of good and p’fect Remembrance Laud and praise be to God therefore And remembering with my ,,,,,, ye uncertainty of death and ye uncertainty of ye day and howre of death do devise constitute Ordaine and make this my last will and Testam’t in manner and forme following First I bequeath my Soule into the hands of my Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ to have free release and pardon of all my Synns and after this life life Everlasting And my body to be buried in ye p’ish Church yard of Eckington at ye discretion of my friends And as for those worldly Goods which God has beene pleased to bestow upon me and for settling …… …… amongst my …… After my debts paid and funeral expenses discharged I give and bequeathe …. …. For the following first I give and bequeath unto Mary Crookes my loving wife all my Messuages Cottages or Tenem’t situate and being in Mosbrough aforesaid with all houses and buildings to ye same belonging now in the occupation of me ye said Wm Croookes and also two closes of land meadow or pasture to ye same adjoining commonly called ye near and ye nether Kannowhill closes for and during the Term of her naturall life And then after her decease I give and bequeath all ye said houses and lands unto Henry Crookes my Son his heires and Assignes for ever. Upon condition following that he the said Henry Crookes my Son his heirs Ex’s Adm’s or Assinges pay or cause to be paid unto William Crookes my son Twenty pounds of lawfull English money within one whole month after the decease of me the said William Crookes and Mary my wife. And also pay or cause to be paid unto Dorothy Crookes my daughter the just and …. Sume of Ten pounds within one month after ye decease of me the s’d William Crookes and Mary my wife as aforesaid But if my son Henry Crookes shall make default in paym’t of either of the said sums above mentioned at ye time lymitted for ye payment of the same That the he the said William Crookes my son and Dorothy Crookes my daughter shall and may lawfully enter and enjoy the said messuages or Tenements and other lands above mentioned and until such tyme as the said sums of Thirty pounds bee fully satisfied and paid And also my will and minde is that if it please God that either my son William Crookes or my daughter Dorothy Crookes shall dye before the said sumes of money be paid unto them that then such sume or sumes shall be equally devided amongst ye rest of my children And further my will and mynde is that my son in law William Staniforth shall have the tuition and gardenshippe of my said son William Grookes and shall find and provide for him competent meat Drinke Washing Lodgeing and all maner of necessary apparell ……. During the term of his naturall life he the said William Staniforth having the said sume of Twenty pounds paid unto him from ye said Henry Crookes and he taking and having the benefit of the same But if my son William Crookes shall dye at any tyme within the space of Seaven years after the decease of me the said William Crookes and Mary my wife Then my s’d son William Staniforth shall repay both unto my son Henry and my daughter Dorothy to either of them forty shillings And also I give and bequeath unto my said wife Mary Crookes one p’cell of land meadow or pasture lying in a certaine place commonly called the long Shortbutts containing by estimation halfe an Acre more or less with all and every the appurences unto the …… behoof of the said Mary Crookes her heires and asinges for ever.
